TRIPLE M, MIGHTY MARK MELLIGEN, WON ON A 2ND ROUND TKO BY Rod Mijares, June 20, 2009
The pride of ALA Boxing Gym of Cebu, Philippines and Top Rank Promotions best kept secret and top young prospect, Mark Jason Melligen, won by 2nd round technical knockout over his opponent Mexican Fabian Luque as relayed by Tony Martin, Melligen's hardworking trainer, from Ensinada, Mexico where the fight was held. Melligen started hot from the very first round putting his opponent on the canvas. Luque was able to beat the 8th count but was so wobbly to fight back or defend himself. As such, he was thankful that the bell saved him and gave him a respite from further punishment. However, Melligen continued where he left off in the second round and again knocked down Luque. He did beat the count but Melligen continued his barrage until the referee could not take it anymore and has to stop the onslaught to avoid further damage to Luque.
Over 2000 Mexican fans in a standing room and jampacked arena witnessed one of their own going down twice at the hands of Melligen. After the fight when the boxers where hanging out with the fans, the Mexicans were congratulating Melligen for a very spectacular win akin to Manny Pacquiao's style. Mark Jason Melligen, no doubt, has added Mexican fans to his side. Edito Villamor, Melligen's long time trainer from the Philippines was also in his corner to assure the win. With this very convincing win, Melligen made another historic rise one step closer to his dream of a championship fight in the very near future. With Manny Pacquiao in almost certainty leaving the boxing world and entering Philippine politics by 2010 with the belief that he will be of more help to his countrymen as a congressman rather than a great boxer, Melligen will surely be one of the Filipino promising boxers who will be filling Manny's big shoes in promoting boxing interest and thus, continue bringing excitement to boxing fans worldwide. Melligen is scheduled to fight to yet unnamed opponent on August 15, 2009 at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino as an undercard of the Interim WBA world super flyweight title fight between Filipino IBF/IBO flyweight champion Nonito Donaire and Mexican Hugo Fidel Cazares. He has now a record of 15 wins (11 KO) and 1 lost (1KO).----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------MIGHTY MARK MELLIGEN FIGHTS LUQUE IN MEXICO by Rod Mijares, June 9, 2009

Mark Jason Melligen, the pride and current unofficial boxing ambassador of ALA Gym in America, is set to prove his boxing prowess once again as Top Rank’s promising prospect. After two successful and convincing fights in American soil in a span of nearly two months, battle tested Melligen (14(10KO), 1(KO),0) is scheduled to fight Mexican Fabian Luque (21(12KO),8(7KO),4) on June 20, 2009 in Juarez, Mexico where the main event is between Mexican boxing great Jorge Arce (51(39KO), 5(3KO),1)and Filipino sensation Fernando Lumacad (19(7KO), 1(0KO), 2). Melligen’s preparation is no heaven as he has been sparring with Argentinian boxer Marcos Rene Maidana, one of the best light welterweight fighters in the world today. In fact, Maidana who has a record of 25 wins with 24 knockouts against only 1 loss will be fighting American Victor Ortiz who also has an impressive record of 24 wins with 19 knockouts and similarly 1 loss and 1 draw on June 27, 2009 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California for the interim WBA World light welterweight title. “Melligen held his own against Maidana which proves that his boxing skill is comparable if not better with the best in the world. So far they have sparred a total of more than 50 rounds and they were all excellent and tough sparring sessions.” Tony Martin, Melligen’s handler in Las Vegas said. “Melligen is in tip top condition as he works very hard. I am very confident and I expect nothing but a win for him. I am extremely happy that Top Rank is behind us with their utmost support and it is a pleasure working with them,” Martin added. “Likewise, I am also thankful to Mr. Tony Aldeguer and Mr. Michael Aldeguer of ALA Gym for entrusting Melligen to me and guiding his boxing career and his future.” The future, no doubt, is bright for Melligen. He is almost a mainstay at Mayweather Gym where he has been training since his arrival in America in November of 2008. He has gain quite a good reputation for his training and most of all for his boxing prowess which he has to prove again in almost two weeks time against Luque. It is interesting to note that Luque lost on a 5th round TKO against Ukrainian Dmitriy Salita who fought an 8th round draw with Ramon Montano. But Ramon Montano lost on a unanimous decision against Melligen. So, mathematically, Melligen should waste no time in disposing Luque to cement a bright future for him in the eyes of Top Rank and in the eyes of boxing fans. | |
