MEN OF THE 80s CONCERT

By Rod Mijares  (Courtesy of LV Valley Balita and Viva Las Vegas magazine)

September 28, 2008

Like any concert by any Filipino entertainers in Las Vegas from the past until now, Men of the 80s concert
did not start on time but it was a blast worth the waiting.  Blast from the performers and blast from the fans.  It was a very spectacular show from the start until the end when the performers shared the stage with the producers and with the fans and filled it to capacity where everybody was dancing to Men of the 80s music.  Flash bulbs from cameras and cell phones kept on flashing like christmas lights as the fans crowded the Men of the 80s performers, Louie Heredia, Raymond Lauchengo, Gino Padilla and Randy Santiago with hugs and kisses as they kept on singing and other fans kept on dancing and giggling.

Men of the 80s concert was held on September 28, 2008 at Tropicana Hotel & Casino’s The Grand Ballroom.  The way the stage was set up was admirable not only for the performers but also for the fans’ sake with access at both ends.  It was not high enough that fans found an easy access onto it by jumping onto the stage or pulled onto it without using the stairs as the producers encouraged the fans to join their idols on
the stage for a more enjoyable active participation, fun and sharing.

It was a continuous display of talent by the performers singing one after the other, in duet or all of them at the same time where there was not a minute of lull and where the songs were replaced by timely one liners and the performer's life highlights.

Louie Heredia thank the fans for showing up to reminisce the hits of the 80s with them.  Then, he mentioned that he was the only one among the four that was still single but has a cat named “Minski” who he already missed by now.  He was into cooking and gave his number, 091-77956346 to whoever wants to order his specialty, Paelya Valenciana, in Manila.

Gino Padilla mentioned that he grew up in Las Vegas until he tried his luck in the Philippines in the 1980’s with the help of his cousin, Zsa Zsa Padilla.  He was emotional as his parents and family were in the crowd.  Later, he showed a video clip of himself when he made a commercial with the famous American legend
Tina Tyler for the Pepsi commercial in 1986 and the audience responded with applause and appreciation.

Raymond Lauchengco mentioned that he was now a very happy family man as husband and father to a baby girl and thankful of his launch movie, “Bagets,” which catapulted him to stardom.  Of course, Randy Santiago talked of his being a one-woman man that brought smiles and laughter to the audience because this was the exact opposite of his famous song, “Babaero,” or playboy which he sang along with “Hindi Magbabago” and his other hits.

Gino’s duet with the power house Diva, Jessa, was phenomenal.  Not to be outdone, special guest, Jam Morales, treated the crowd with her solo performance singing three of her favorite and memorable songs which the fans recognized with appreciation.

Every song and every piece of music performed by each of the Men of the 80s was felt by the audience.
It’s like there were stories of their lives tied to each song as they responded with awe and admiration as they remember the lyrics and sing along.  Husband and wife, Gina and Jojo Manigbas of Mountain Edge, in particular, dictated the titles of most of the songs to me that were sang by the Men of the 80s.

The performance was not that all love songs and theme songs of the 80s movies like Breakfast Club, Electric Dreams, Zapped and Tootsie which they sang.   The fans went into hysteria with their imitation portion.  Raymond Lauchengco came out as “Menudo,” Gino Padilla sang and danced with the “Beat It” of Michael Jackson, Louie Heredia came out as Boy George and Randy Santiago brought the crowds into tears of laughter with his rendition of Prince complete with bulging paraphernalia below his belt.

The Men of the 80s Concert was a complete success as Vegans were treated to memorable songs, laughter and dancing as the four entertainers complement each other with their own brand of music and style and the result was a power house performance.

They started with the song “All Night Long” to celebrate a joyous night and they finished with “Farewell” with a sure hope that they will have a repeat performance in the future to include those fans who missed them today.

Aside from the fans, the Men of the 80s also thank the producers, Ernan Ebrio of EE Entertainment, Dan Delon of Dee Bee Enterprise, Ronnie and Orland Collantes of RO Entertainment and Joel Macaspac of Liveline Concepts & Production and the sponsors, LV Valley Balita, Philippine Times of LV, Seafood City, Monet Salon, Fiesta Filipina, Valerio Bakery, NYK Diamond Exchange, El Cortez Hotel and much more.
