Journey, The Concert and Arnel Pineda
By Rey Andrada San Francisco, California-October 1, 2008
It was a concert of three bands in one night, Cheap Trick, Heart and
Journey. Journey was the main attraction in the line up. It was held
on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at the Shoreline amphitheater in
Mountain View California. Surprisingly, there were a lot of young kids
of different ethnicity but mostly Americans since after all the bands
are all American.
The
night was still warm, I was in shorts and t-shirt but as the night goes
on it becomes colder. The smell of something particular in a concert
of this magnitude was all around. It was like the 60's all over again.
The "Cheap Trick" opened the concert followed by "Heart" with leading singers Nancy and Ann.
Journey,
a San Francisco bay Area band with a Filipino lead singer, followed
thereafter. Wow, I thought I was dreaming but it was real. Arnel
Pineda was proudly introduced by his band on stage at Mountain View's
Shoreline amphitheater to a capacity crowd of 22,000 plus adoring fans.
As
far as I know this is the first Journey concert with Arnel Pineda in
the Bay Area and people accepted him well. Arnel was a total
performer, singing with the deepest feeling, dancing, jumping and
swirling around and carrying the load of the concert on his shoulders
like any lead singer of any band. While the other members of the
Journey dazzled the audience with their talents on their instruments,
Arnel wooed the crowd with his rendition of the Journey songs with his
voice which magically adapter to the Journey's kind of music. We were
all standing from beginning to end in the lawn section of the
amphitheater when Journey was introuduced as if to say "hey man we dig
you". I am glad Arnel responded by saying "this song is dedicated to
you guys in the lawn section, San Francisco and Pinoys". That was
heart warming coming from a Filipino lead singer who is now on stage
with one of the famous bands of the 70's.
It was a night of rock
and roll that my wife and I did not really expected. We thought we
would go to a concert hoping to listen to a band with a Filipino lead
singer and be home like any other concert we have been to. This one
was different, we had fun and enjoyed listening to a fresh voice from
the Philippines. It was an electric night for us and for everybody in
the audience. Journey rocks and Arnel rocks.
I must admit I was
not a fan of Journey but after the show my wife and I declared to watch
another of their concert if there will be another one. Arnel Pineda's
version of "Lovin' Touchin' Squezin" their final song did me in.
Arnel did great and I am glad he is proud of his Filipino heritage. | |
