FIL-AM BRANDON VERA WON IN UFC FIGHT NIGHT

By Rod Mijares
Las Vegas, July 25, 2008

Brandon Vera who is proud of his Filipino heritage and who started fighting as a heavyweight just won his debut in the light heavyweight division (205 pounds) of UFC's mixed martial arts against Reese Andy
(7 wins-1 loss before this fight).  It was held at Palms Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 25, 2008 and was televised lived in Spike TV.

Brandon who is known in UFC as "The Truth" is one of the Filipino notables highlighted in Fil-Amboxers.com.  He was born in Norfolk, Virginia but is fighting out of San Diego, California.  He is 30 years old and is fighting tall at 6' 3" and has now a record of 9 wins with 2 losses.

It should be noted that Brandon went to the Philippines some months ago and trained Richard Gutierrez on some fighting moves and stance for Gutierrez' upcoming TV series.

The fight went to the distance of 3 rounds and 5 minutes each round.  Two judges scored it 30-27 for Vera and one judge scored it 29-28 for Vera, as well, for a unanimous decision.

Most of Vera's wins were knockouts as compared to this fight where excitement and explosiveness were missing.  Andy who was only 5' 10" knew that he could not fight Vera from a distance with a big height difference.  He kept on pushing Vera to the cage and worked on kicking his opponents left thighs while they kept on clinching each other.  Vera fought back with knees and elbows of his own to Andy's head until he slammed down Andy to the canvas.

In the first round, Vera's left kick hit Andy and sent him to the canvas but Vera failed to move forward to follow-up as he let Andy stood up.  A right by Andy hit Brandon on his left face.

The second round was all locking each other legs with occasional exchanges of punches between the two.  When the two got loose, a nice fake by Andy with a follow-up punch caught Vera on the chin.  Vera
countered with his left foot and a right knee.  A right kick that hit Andy's left leg close the second round.

The third round was also another clinching fight with Andy working again on Vera's left thigh.  The referee broke up the clinch with about 3 minutes to go.  At about 1:30 minutes to go, Vera scored two knees to
Andy's face.

The main event saw Brazilian Anderson Silva (21-4), the current UFC Middleweight Champion and
considered the best pound for pound and the most dangerous fighter and the cream of the cream of
mixed martial arts knocking out his opponent, James Irvin fighting out from Sacramento, California
early in the first round of their scheduled 3-round light heavyweight fight.

BRENDA SHAYLOR READY TO FIGHT IN CEBU

By Rod Mijares
Las Vegas, July 19, 2008

Brenda Shaylor with her trainer, Tony Martin.  Photo by Rod Mijares

She is one talented American girl who possesses the 3B's in life; beauty, brain and boxing skills.  She
took the PAL flight 107 from Las Vegas on July 19, 2008 bound for Cebu, Philippines with Tony Martin,
her boxing trainer.  Tony Martin used to be a resident of Labangon and Li-loan, Cebu with his family for
18 years.  Over there, he trained a number of promising Filipino boxers before migrating to America and
settled in Las Vegas, the  boxing capital of the world.

"Don't be fooled by her good looks as this girl possesses power punches that will knock you down,"
Tony said of Brenda Shaylor.  "She has that woman nature and that inside aggression that she will
hit back and counter-punch with every opportunity if ever on the receiving end of a punch.

"I am nervous," Brenda said of her upcoming fight on July 26, 2008 at Cebu Coliseum as a special attraction
and one of the supporting bouts to the main event between AJ Banal (17 Wins , 0 Lost, 1 Draw) and Rafael Concepcion (10 wins, 2 Loses, 1 Draw) for the vacant WBA super flyweight Title.

A natural response for a very humble 23-year old woman who always carries a smile and who just passed
the nursing board exam in Las Vegas, Nevada last July 15, 2008.  She just finished a nursing degree at
College of Southern Nevada last May, 2008 and is now a registered nurse in one of the hospitals in Las Vegas.

"I am thankful to Mr. Tony Aldeguer and the ALA promotions for giving me the opportunity to show by
boxing skills and to my trainer, Tony Martin, who has been training me and hones my skills for over
a year now and I am excited that I will be going to the Philippines not just to fight but to learn about the
country and its people, Brenda said.

For the fight, Brenda is continuously training and underwent about 30 rounds of sparring with a male
boxer and a female boxer 50 pounds heavier than her.  Tony said that upon arrival in Cebu, she will
undergo two days of intense training before slowing down in preparation for the fight.

Like any other health conscious American girl, Brenda started boxing as a work out to keep her body
fit.  Instead of going to 24-hour fitness gym and work on the treadmill, she hit the punching bags and
develop the love for the sports of boxing.  In the process she did not just a develop a healthy body
but also confidence in her day to day life. With that she already has 3 winning bouts on her resume.

"This fight will open the door to Brenda to a lot of opportunities and I hope she will realize it,"
Tony Martin added.  "I am very confident that Brenda will be successful in life with her boxing skills
and more so with her day to day life as a nurse helping her patients."
